Mewgenics features a robust system of randomized encounters that can make or break a playthrough. Each chapter contains events that trigger between battles or as unique map nodes.
Most events follow a consistent pattern:
- Intro: A bizarre or dark narrative setup.
- Choice / Skill Check: You select a cat to interact. Their stats (Strength, Luck, etc.) determine the success rate.
- Outcomes:
- Blessings: Gain rare items, new mutated traits, or stat boosts.
- Tragedies: Permanent injuries, diseases, or mental disorders.
- The Rusty Razor: A risky blessing/curse item discovery.
- The Stairs: A test of Dexterity. Failure leads to a "Cat fell down stairs" tragedy (injury).
- The Ear Parasite: A failed skill check results in a parasite entering the cat's ear, slowly degrading stats until total collapse.
- Scatological Discovery: A cat might find a pile of waste and, through a series of choices, develop a "Scatological" disorder.
- Diversify your stats: Having a balanced team ensures someone always has a decent chance at passing a specific stat check.
- Risk Assessment: Sometimes the best choice is to "Walk Away" if you cannot afford for a key cat to gain a permanent disability.
